Living on or close to the grounds of the hotel has long been a tradition at Clevelands House and today space is provided for 185 live-in staff. In order to make Clevelands House a family-focused resort, major improvements and additions were necessary. The physical plant was renovated, new cottages built and a swimming pool and tennis courts built.
It was this home — that is amazingly still standing today, albeit in a modern form — that provided the incentive to build a summer hotel. Summer visitors stayed with the Minetts and the suggestion was made that they build a proper hotel on the site. Designed and built by Charles without any blueprints, it was constructed from lumber taken from the property. The original building was two storeys, with eight bedrooms, dining and living room areas and a kitchen wing.

Bob worked for Mrs. Minett for his first few years and then for Ted Wright, who bought the hotel from the Minetts in 1953. Ted Wright was a sales representative for a Toronto newspaper and had fallen in love with the resort. Arthur Minett was determined to sell the hotel outside the family and he found his buyer in his friend Wright. Wright’s goal was to modernize Clevelands House, enlarging the rooms and landscaping the grounds — bringing the hotel up to the 1950s standards that were being set around Muskoka. While the Minetts had aimed their services at a distinctly middle-aged clientele, Wright decided to appeal to the party and convention crowds, obtaining a liquor licence and marketing a “young” image to patrons. It was during this time that Bob Cornell became manager of the resort.
